Cristhian David Meneses, the political prisoner who participated in the protests in Masaya, in solidarity with the retired people

Cristhian David Meneses, 30 years old, is originally from Masaya, father of a child and was engaged in the sale of electronic objects (chargers, headphones). From April 20, 2018, he had an active participation in the anti-government protests, motivated by the pension reforms of the Nicaraguan Institute of Social Security (INSS) that harmed retired people.

His life was exposed to danger during the “cleaning operation” that aimed to repress protests through the use of weapons and make arrests in charge of the police and vigilante groupse was captured in 2018, at the barricades of Niquinohomo, department of Masaya, where he had remained for 3 months in protest. They attributed him the participation allegedly in the murder and desecration of policeman Gabriel Vado who died on July 15, 2018, during the period of the protests and months later he was released from prison.

After his release, Cristhian, due to the siege and persecution that continued against him, he went into exile in Costa Rica, where he suffered economic needs along with his family, working on a farm as a laborer “al machete”.

Upon returning to his country, Christian was recaptured upon his return, on August 16, 2020, in the municipality of San Juan de Nicaragua. The Nicaraguan Army referred him to the Police, however, the police authorities presented him until 10 days later to the order of a competent judge.

Cristhian was accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office, without any motive, for the crimes of aggravated murder, organized crime, international trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic and other controlled substances, possession and use of restricted weapons, artifacts and explosives, in this second capture, the police linked him for allegedly participating in a gang called “Los Topos”, in the border area of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. Cristhian was sentenced to an unjust 48 year prison term and forced to pay a fine of 43 thousand córdobas, in a trial full of due process violations.

Cristhian is serving his sentence in the Jorge Navarro penitentiary system known as “la Modelo”. His relatives denounced that on September 15, 2020, he was tortured by prison authorities when he was sent to maximum security cell 300 and then placed in solitary confinement.
