Moisés Alfredo Leiva

Moisés Alfredo Leiva: the belligerent opponent in the protests from the prison system.

Moisés Alfredo Leiva, 25 years old, originally from the Sor María Romero neighborhood in Matagalpa, joined the civic protests against the government starting in April 2018.

He was arbitrarily detained by the police in Matagalpa on September 28, 2018 and was accused by the Public Ministry for the crimes of attempted murder, arson and illegal carrying of firearms, since they pointed out that he was one of the alleged perpetrators of the burning of the Matagalpa police facilities and the Comisariato (several products store for police personnel), as well as leading the roadblocks located in Matagalpa, as of April 2018.

He was imprisoned in the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System, known as “La Modelo”, where he was subjected by the penitentiary authorities to severe punishments, he did not have access to food, drinking water and electricity, because he protested together with other prisoners for political reasons demanding freedom.

Due to the protests that he made during his incarceration, the prison authorities fractured his nose, however he was denied adequate medical attention and his aggressors pointed out that the wound he had was superficial.

Moisés was released for the first time on April 5, 2019, under the “family coexistence” regime. He was recaptured five months later on September 19, 2019.

The Public Ministry accused him of the crime of aggravated robbery and he was sentenced in Matagalpa by Judge Claudia Angélica Sánchez to six years in prison. He is currently serving the unjust sentence in the Waswalí Penitentiary System in Matagalpa.
