José Gutiérrez: Two Years Imprisoned Without Conviction for Participating in Peaceful Demonstrations
José Gutiérrez, who is 38 years old, and, participated and shared on social media pictures and videos during the peaceful demonstrations that took place April 2018 of what was happening.
That was enough so the members of the FSLN of Bluefields, Autonomous Region of the South Caribbean Coast, where he is from, pointed him out as a target and in June 2021, they besieged him to such an extent that multiple police patrols cornered him until they captured him at the entrance of the city of Bluefields.
Since then, Jose has been accused of multiple crimes, that they have not been able to prove, and despite being detained in Bluefields, he was transferred to Managua for his trial in which they completely violated his judicial guarantees.
He is detained in the Jorge Navarro “La Modelo” Penitentiary System, and his family has had limited access to visits or ability to deliver food or medicine.
His relatives denounce that they have a given them a date for the trial, and the reschedule it for 6 months, and this has continued since his capture 2 years ago.
The prosecutor’s office charged him with crimes of drug possession and organized crime, which they were unable to prove, and still they have not released him due to what they consider are political repercussions because, in addition to participating in peaceful demonstrations, Jose is also the brother of former mayor of Bluefields, Luis Gutierrez Galvez.
José Gutiérrez has not committed a crime.
