José Alejandro Hurtado is a reknowned Nicaraguan liberal, 57 years old. Between 1990 and 1995 he was a member of the National Opposition Union (UNO). From 1996 to 2020 he was parto f the Constitutionalist Liberal Party (PLC). For his political work, the Sandinista National Liberation Front took reprisals against him before 2018 In 2024 he joined the Independent Liberal Party (PLI), and he was a member of their board of directors.

In August 2024, Alejandro rpesented a proposal for a national dialogue to the government of Nicaragua, in order to find peaceful and democratic solutions to the country’s serious human rights crisis. A few months later, after January 27th, 2025, around 8:30PM, two people dressed in civilian clothing showed up at his home. They told him he would be detained preventitively because “someone had rented a car in his name” and that said car had been stolen. Therefore; he had to go to the police station. Then, three patrol cars and another group of police agents arrived at the scene to detain him and search his house, without showing a court order and took all the digital devices. The officers carries war weapons in an intimidating matter. The detention was in retaliation for Alejandro’s activities as a member of the PLI board of directors. Since January 27, 2025, his relatives and close friends have not known his whereabouts, and he has been in a situation of forced disappearance since then.

On Janaury 29, 2025, people close to him went to look for him at the Directorate of Judicial Assistance of the National Police (known as “El Chipote”) and Districts II, III and V of the National Police in Managua, because at the time of his capture, a police officer recommended that they go look for him in any of those places. However, none of these police centers gave them information about his wheareabouts or the reasons for his detention. On January 30, 2025, they asked for information about him in the “Jorge Navarro” National penitentiary System (known as La Modelo), but they did not receive

So far, his relatives have not filed any complaints due to systematic impunity, the lack of independence of the judiciary and fear of reprisals. Nor they know about the existance of any criminal proceedings against Alejandro and no information appears in the Nicarao System in this regard.

Taking into account the serious risks he faces to his life and personal integrity, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted him precautionary measures on March 14, 2025. The measures were not complied with by the State, so the IACHR requested provisional measures from the Inter-American Court of Human Rights on May 20, 2025.
