Edder Oniel Muñóz Centeno, deprived of liberty for protesting through social networks

Edder Muñoz, 34 years old, is originally from Masaya, member of the Civic Alliance for Justice and Democracy in Masaya, actively participated in social networks, protesting against government policies.

He was arrested for the first time in November 2018, was charged by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the crime of Terrorism and released under the regime of family cohabitation on May 20, 2019.

He was recaptured on September 22, 2019 and released hours later. Edder denounced on that occasion that during his detention he was physically assaulted when he was taken aboard the police patrol car and the police put boots on his face, jumped on his body, threatened to throw him into the Masaya volcano and that he had to leave Nicaragua, otherwise they would kill him.

On November 23, 2021, the police, with approximately 13 members and the use of the canine technique, executed an illegal search, without a warrant, in his home, where they physically assaulted him, denounced his relatives, and arrested him for the third time.

Edder was accused by the Public Prosecutor’s Office for the crime of internal trafficking of narcotics, psychotropic and other controlled substances and illegal possession of firearms or ammunition, was convicted and sentenced to 8 years and 6 months in prison and ordered to pay a fine of 23,100 córdobas.

He is currently serving an unjust sentence in the Penitentiary System of Granada. Due to the lack of adequate medical attention, his health has deteriorated, he has lost approximately 15 pounds and suffers from depressive states.
