Kevin Castillo: twice arrested for participating in peaceful protests
Kevin Castillo, a 30-year-old man from Leon, was captured twice by the Police of the Ortega-Murillo regime: the first time in 2019 when he was accused of the theft of a bicycle and was subsequently released after the approval of the controversial Amnesty Law.
The second occasion was on September 4, 2021 when he was charged with the crime of drug possession. During the arrest it was reported that there was excessive violence and that he was seriously beaten as a result.
He was taken to the León Penitentiary System, and his family is asking for his release because he suffers from various illnesses, including hypertension and heart problems, but his feet have also become swollen and he has had trouble breathing.
Those who have seen him also denounced that he is suffering cruel and degrading treatment and that the authorities of the Penitentiary System give him rotten food, and as happened with other persons deprived of liberty for political reasons, they do not allow him to receive sun.
After learning of his situation, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights issued a resolution on December 30, 2023 in which they requested the State of Nicaragua to adopt measures to guarantee the right to life, integrity and health of the beneficiaries.
Kevin Castillo did not commit any crime, he is one more victim of the Ortega-Murillo regime and the repression they unleashed against all people they identify as opponents or who participated in the peaceful demonstrations started in April 2018.
