From the #NicasLibresYa campaign, led by Race & Equality, we denounce that the situation of Abdul Montoya, political prisoner of the Daniel Ortega and Rosario Murillo regime has worsened since he was illegally detained for the second time on April 3rd, 2023.
During this year, Montoya has been transferred from galleries on two occasions, in the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System “La Modelo”, and on the last occasion he was left together with two common prisoners serving 25-year sentences for homicide and the other 22 years for aggravated robbery.
These prisoners keep Montoya seated in a corner of the cell all day long, do not allow him to go near the door and, as part of the abuses they commit against him, force him to clean the feces and wash the dishes of the three of them.
Sitting in a corner of the cell all day is causing Montoya to suffer from hip pains, adding to the illnesses that already afflicted him: diabetes and hypertension.
The Ortega-Murillo regime has not allowed him a single visit from his 14-year-old son, making their relationship impossible.
From the organizations that make up #NicasLibresYa we demand the Ortega-Murillo regime to immediately release Abdul Montoya and we join the request made by the Inter-American Court of Human Rights in July of this year to also guarantee the safety of his family.
