Hader Humberto González Zeledón, the former police officer who joined the civic protests in Masaya starting in April 2018

Hader Humberto González Zeledón, 32, father of four minor children, is originally from Masaya, a lawyer by profession. He was a member of the National Police until 2012. He joined the protests starting in April 2018 in Masaya, which led to the siege, persecution and death threats by the Police and parastatal elements.

The siege and persecution forced him into exile, and he went to Costa Rica in 2018, however, due to the difficult economic situation he was going through, on August 16, 2020 he decided to return to his country. After his return, he was captured in the municipality of San Juan de Nicaragua. The Army sent him to the Police, however, the authorities presented him before a judge up to 10 days later, accusing him of being one of the participants in a gang known as “Los Topos” that operated in the border area of Nicaragua and Costa Rica. .

Hader was accused by the Public Ministry for the following crimes: aggravated murder, organized crime, drug trafficking, psychotropic drugs and other controlled substances, illegal possession and use of restricted weapons. Military and police officers appeared as witnesses at the trial. He was sentenced by the Tenth Criminal Trial District Court under Judge Nancy Aguirre, to 48 years in prison and a fine equivalent to 43,400 córdobas. The sentence handed down was confirmed by the Court of Appeals of Managua and the case is currently awaiting judgment on the Appeal of Cassation filed in the Criminal Chamber of the Supreme Court of Justice.

Hader is serving his unjust sentence in the Jorge Navarro Penitentiary System known as “la Modelo”, in a maximum security cell, located in “Gallery 300”. Hader has presented kidney problems, without the prison authorities allowing him to receive due attention, it has been reported that he has been tortured by the director of the maximum security cells, that he has been physically assaulted and has been placed in shackles on his hands and feet.
